Brief history Kilmarnock Angling Club
Kilmarnock Angling was formed in 1889 and was one of the first to be established on the River Irvine system.

For years because the river was in the main industrial belt in the West of Scotland pollution was a major problem. It was not until legislation forced the polluters, the mills, foundries etc to clean up the river that Brown Trout, Salmon and Seatrout started to appear again.
Over the years anglers started to clear the river and its tributaries improving the whole environment. Member clubs in the River Irvine Angling Association asked the Ayrshire rivers trust biologists to give a “Habitat and an Electro Fishing Survey” it showed the improvements required on the Kilmarnock stretch.

The main one on the river is to build a “Fish Pass” on the Kilmarnock Water allowing the free migration of Salmon and Sea trout upstream into the spawning areas. The cost of this project is in the region of £80,000 and is hoped to be completed this year 2011.

Also this year 2011 a new hatchery will be built at Dean Castle Country Park which will serve to enhance stock from the lower reaches of the River Irvine and its tributaries. This will be called the Dean Castle Hatchery and will run along with the Galston Hatchery which serves the Upper River Irvine catchment.
